Does Ashwagandha Make You Sleepy? What Studies Show

Short answer: does ashwagandha make you sleepy? For most people it does not act like a sleeping pill, but drowsiness is one of its more common side effects, and some people feel calmer and sleepier in the evening. Studies link it to better sleep quality over several weeks rather than an instant knockout effect.

Why some people feel drowsy

  • Ashwagandha has been linked to lower stress scores and lower cortisol, the body's main stress hormone (Lopresti et al., 2019). Feeling less wired can feel like feeling sleepy.
  • The NCCIH lists drowsiness, stomach upset and loose stools as the most common side effects.
  • Higher doses and taking it with other calming products (sleep blends, antihistamines, alcohol) make daytime drowsiness more likely.

What the research says about sleep

  • A 2021 meta-analysis of 5 randomised trials linked ashwagandha extract to small improvements in overall sleep, with bigger effects at 600 mg a day or more and after at least 8 weeks (Cheah et al., 2021).
  • In an 8-week trial, 300 mg of root extract twice a day was linked to faster sleep onset and better sleep quality than placebo in adults with poor sleep (Langade et al., 2019).
  • Most of these studies measured sleep at night, not alertness during the day, so daytime sleepiness is better judged on how you personally respond.

How to time it if it makes you sleepy

  • Move it to the evening: if you feel flat after a morning dose, take it with dinner instead.
  • Lower the dose: start around 250 to 300 mg of extract and build slowly.
  • Avoid stacking sedatives: do not combine it with alcohol, sleep medication or several calming supplements at once.
  • Do not drive drowsy: wait until you know how it affects you.

Check first if this is you

If you are pregnant or nursing, have a thyroid or liver condition, have an autoimmune condition, take sedatives, thyroid, blood pressure or blood sugar medication, or are having surgery soon, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using ashwagandha.
